New Orleans Government Investigations & White Collar Partner, Peter Strasser, recently published an article in the Washington and Lee Law Review entitled “An Anti-Corruption Bureau’s Inexorable Endeavor: A Study of Malawi’s Cashgate Scandal.”The article examines whether the southern African nation of Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau has the operational capability to investigate and prosecute the embezzlement of $350 million from the country’s treasury over a five year period. Numerous senior civil servants and cabinet ministers have been implicated in the scheme. Most significantly for Malawi, western donors have suspended critical budgetary aid of $150 million annually until the government not only implements financial management reforms but also fully prosecutes the perpetrators and recovers the stolen assets.
