Overview

Chaffe McCall seeks to hire a diverse group of highly motivated, well-rounded law students with excellent academic records.  Our Summer Associate program is an integral part to the firm’s growth and new associates are hired almost exclusively through the program.

Summer Associates are offered a six-week session in our New Orleans Office at the beginning of the summer to experience professional life at Chaffe McCall.  We prefer for every Summer Associate to spend the full six weeks with us, but we will attempt to accommodate busy summer schedules. Each Summer Associate is assigned two mentors (one partner and one associate) to serve as invaluable resources to answer questions and provide any and all assistance or guidance as necessary.

The Summer Associate program is structured to resemble the work experience of a new associate in the every-day atmosphere of our firm.  Each Summer Associate is encouraged to work in each of the firm’s practice areas, and we make every effort to accommodate any specific interest a Summer Associate might have in a particular area of law.

Summer Associates typically spend time researching and analyzing legal issues, drafting pleadings, and creating transactional documents.   Chaffe McCall also prides itself on providing Summer Associates with learning experiences out of the office.  Whenever possible, Summer Associates accompany attorneys to depositions, hearings, trials, mediations, closings, client meetings, worksite visits, and vessel inspections.   Every two weeks, mentors meet with their Summer Associates to review their assignments, work product, written evaluations,  and overall experience. These “real-time” evaluations allow for the Summer Associates to receive feedback on their performance, as well as learn and refine their legal skills while at Chaffe.  We also provide classes to our Summer Associates in several areas,  including electronic research, writing skills, and deposition-taking techniques.  Each of Chaffe McCall’s legal practice areas hosts a luncheon meeting for the Summer Associates, to allow them an opportunity to learn about each area of practice.

In addition to work life, we host many social events to better get to know our Summer Associates and introduce them to the camaraderie and family atmosphere that make Chaffe an enjoyable environment and place to work. These events include lunches, dinners, sporting events, cocktail receptions, wine tastings, fishing trips, afternoons at Lafayette Square, golf outings, and many more impromptu informal fun activities.

We encourage every qualified candidate with interest to apply to our Summer Associate program, and we look forward to meeting each of you.

Recruiting Events

To accurately gain a sense of all aspects of the firm, Summer Associates are invited to participate in a variety of activities with the lawyers of Chaffe McCall.  These events provide Summer Associates with opportunities to get to know our attorneys in a more relaxed setting.  Every year we try to offer something different, but many events have become staples of the summer.  Last year's events included a wine tasting at Café Adelaide, fishing in Lafitte, lunch at Mr. B’s, lunch at Arnaud’s Restaurant, cocktail parties at the homes of firm members, daily lunches, Wednesdays at Lafayette Square, and many other spontaneous gatherings and events.

Testimonials

"My clerkship at Chaffe McCall was rewarding in so many ways.  Not only did I gain valuable experience doing meaningful legal research and writing, but I also had a blast at the many events that the firm so thoughtfully planned.  If the clerks weren’t fishing or having a barbecue at an associate’s house, we were enjoying a wine tasting or having lunch at one of New Orleans’ many feature restaurants.  More than anything, however, it was the people at Chaffe that made for such an extraordinary experience.  The attorneys at Chaffe made me feel welcomed and quickly got me involved in a wide range of matters.  The staff likewise saw that my every need was met and had an uncanny way of answering questions before they could even be asked.  I left the clerkship feeling that I had grown both as an individual and as a legal thinker, and I ultimately found a place that I now call home."

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Chaffe McCall look for when considering a student for a Summer Associate position?

Chaffe McCall looks for energetic, well-rounded law students with excellent academic credentials. Applicants should be in the top quarter of their class, and Law Review and Moot Court members are preferred.

How do I apply for a Summer Associate position at Chaffe McCall?

A cover letter and resume should be submitted through the On-Campus Interview process or sent directly to the Chaffe McCall Recruiting Coordinator.  Members of the Recruiting Committee interview 2L students during the fall and decisions are typically announced in November.  We interview 1L students in January and decisions are typically announced by the end of February.

How long does the Summer Associate program last?

Chaffe McCall’s Summer Associate Program takes place for six weeks during the beginning of the summer in the New Orleans office.  In order to maximize the time for mutual evaluation, we prefer that each Summer Associate spend the full six weeks with us, but in the past we have been flexible to accommodate certain situations.

What is the working environment atmosphere of Chaffe McCall?

The work environment of Chaffe McCall has a collegial feel.  There is an open-door firm policy where any member of the firm or Summer Associate can walk into an attorney’s office without hesitation.  The firm has a business casual dress code during the summer, so formal business attire is only worn when needed for attending court, client meetings,  or other special events. Every candidate offered a Summer Associate position is encouraged to visit the firm before the summer to get a first-hand experience of the firm’s atmosphere and every day feel.

What type of work will I do as a Summer Associate?

Summer Associates typically spend time researching and analyzing legal issues, drafting pleadings, and creating transactional documents.  When possible, Summer Associates accompany attorneys to depositions, hearings, motions, trials, mediations, closings, client meetings, worksite visits, and vessel inspections.  We strive to provide Summer Associates with work related to their practice interest.  Chaffe’s goal is to involve Summer Associates in the typical day-to-day activities of a Chaffe McCall associate.

Are Summer Associates assigned a mentor?

Each Summer Associate is assigned two mentors, typically one associate and one partner mentor in the practice area where the Summer Associate has an interest.  The mentors assist the Summer Associate in any aspect of the Summer Associate program, as well as familiarize them with the firm policies and procedures.  In addition, the mentors provide evaluations and feedback to the Summer Associates on their work product.

Are Summer Associates given their own office?

Summer Associates are assigned a carrel with an individual computer in the firm’s library.  We feel that this arrangement allows Summer Associates to develop camaraderie amongst each other,  as well as provide easier access for the attorneys of the firm to intermingle and assist the Summer Associates.

Are there social activities involved in the Summer Associate program?

Yes!  Chaffe McCall offers a variety of events which allow us to get to know each Summer Associate in a more relaxed setting.  Typical events include lunches, dinners, sporting events, cocktail receptions, wine tastings, fishing trips, afternoons at Lafayette Square, golf outings, and many more impromptu informal fun activities around the unique city of New Orleans and beyond.
