Former Chaffe McCall Attorney Elected as U.S. Senator

New Orleans, LA (December 12, 2016) – Former Chaffe McCall Partner, John Neely Kennedy, was recently elected as a United States Senator from Louisiana, succeeding Senior Louisiana Senator, David Vitter. Kennedy won a land-slide victory with over 60 percent of the vote.

Kennedy was a partner with Chaffe McCall in the firm’s Commercial Litigation section. In 1988, Kennedy was tapped by Louisiana Governor, Buddy Roemer, to serve as executive counsel in Baton Rouge, and in 1991 he was appointed as his cabinet secretary. During his tenure with Governor Roemer, Kennedy developed a passion for public service, returning briefly to Chaffe McCall and the practice of law until 1996, when he was called upon by Louisiana Governor “Mike” Foster to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue and Taxation, a cabinet level position. In 1999 Kennedy was elected State Treasurer, a position that he held for five terms until his election as United States Senator on December 10, 2016.

Howell Crosby. Kennedy isn’t the first U.S. Senator from Chaffe McCall. He joins the esteemed office shared by Chaffe McCall’s founding partner, John Slidell, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1853.

Oxford-educated, Kennedy was born in Mississippi and grew up in Zachary, Louisiana. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1973, magna cum laude, with triple degrees in Political Science, Philosophy and Economics. Kennedy received his law degree from the University of Virginia and two years later a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from Magdalen College of Oxford University in England, graduating with first class honours.
