Mr. Walters has been practicing admiralty and maritime law since 1985. Prior to joining Chaffe McCall in January, 2008, he was a partner in the firm of Georgantas & Walters, L.L.P., Houston, TX for over 10 years, where he represented vessel owners, charterers and P&I Clubs, as well as other maritime industry concerns, including customs brokers, surveyors and vessel agents, in a wide range of matters at both the trial and appellate levels. Mr. Walters began his legal career in Houston in 1985, before moving to New York in 1988, where he worked for a prominent admiralty firm for several years. In 1993, Mr. Walters returned to Houston and rejoined Mr. Georgantas in an admiralty and maritime practice.
In the context of his admiralty and maritime practice, Mr. Walters has experience in maritime personal injury matters, cargo damage claims, collisions and other maritime casualties, charter party and bill of lading disputes, maritime arrests and attachments, maritime contract disputes and marine property damage claims. Mr. Walters also has experience in the drafting and negotiation of master service agreements, charter parties and other maritime contracts.
Mr. Walters also practices in the areas of commercial litigation, bankruptcy and creditor’s rights. Mr. Walters has extensive experience representing institutional and asset based lenders and equipment lessors in the state and federal courts of Texas. In his bankruptcy practice, Mr. Walters focuses on the representation of creditors in the bankruptcy cases throughout the State of Texas.
Mr. Walters is admitted to practice in the states of Texas, New York and Massachusetts, as well as in the District of Columbia. Mr. Walters is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Western Districts of Texas, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of Massachusetts and the Northern District of Oklahoma.
Mr. Walters is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Bar Association of the Fifth Federal Circuit, the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the Connecticut Maritime Association, the Houston Mariners Club, the Transportation Lawyers Association and the Equipment Leasing Association.
He is a 1982 graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, NY and a 1985 graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Law, Nashville, TN, where he was an editor for the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law.
